Description
Pelion Sanatorium was the first to be opened in Greece, in 1909. It is located at a distance of two kilometres from Pelion Ski Centre at Chania. It is surrounded by beech forest. Structured terraces, interrupted by mountaineering paths, shape the land. A water source flows out within the limits of the property whereas, at an altitude of 1200 metres, the place provides an unobstructed view over Pagasitikos bay.
It is at a ten-minute distance from the popular tourist destinations, Makrinitsa and Portaria villages, which have a snowplow operator, a rural clinic, hotels and restaurants, as well as an interesting nightlife. It takes the visitor 35 minutes to drive from Volos to the Sanatorium; it is 30 minutes' drive from the Aegean sea and 40 minutes' drive from Pagasitikos bay.
The building acquired its final and current form around 1935 ( needs to be tottaly renovated ), with a clear wards structure, as it has been historically established, in reference to the contemporary sanatoria [Casimir Tollet: Les hopitaux moderns au XIX siècle, Paris 1894].
The planning permission goes up to 12.867 sq. m. whereas the existing building covers an area of 2.056 sq. m., according to the complete Measured Survey that includes a historical documentation, a technical report, photographic documentation and survey drawings.
